Etymology:

• The words “looked backwards from behind” is a not-so-subtle hint that this is a reversal of the Western Semitic idiom, חלם בצן (bastion of strength/health) = a stroke or thrombosis. Compare sagi nahor (full of light) = blind. Its reversal is נְצִיב מ� לַח = pillar of salt. A modern Hebrew word for a stroke or thrombosis is shin-bet-tzadi שָׁבָץ, literally, caused by + mud. Het without a schwa had an ancient W-sound. חלם sounded like WheLM, overwhelmed by mud in a vein or artery in the brain, mud-struck. Compare חֲלוֹם = dream, French dormir = sleep, dormant = motionless  unable to move, and compare מ� לַח = salt with Latin salutis = health.
