To boost up one’s anger or trouble more with your deeds or words, when he/she is already facing worst situation

Etymology:

  • Historians account that long time ago this expression was originally used by Livy, a Roman historian. As it clearly states that adding fuel to the fire always flames up it more and if we pour water on fire, it disappears. Here, fire symbolizes the bad or critical situation or anger of a person and adding fuel is to make that person angrier and create more troubles for him/her with your acts and words.
