Etymology:
- Hundred years ago, people, especially the farmers used a small bag or sack known as a poke. They used to bring their pigs in those pokes to sell in the market. Sometime famer cheated people by saying that they cannot open the poke because by doing so pigs will run away. The reason behind this cheating was to bring undersized pigs or cats to sell instead of good pigs. Therefore, this expression was used to alert people about anything they attain or buy to check it in order to not buy a ‘pig in a poke’.
