A child who shares the same looks, abilities and characteristics as of his parents

Etymology:

  • This idiom was used by the Greeks for the first time hundreds of years ago. They used to build huge structures of stone and wood. While chipping of any piece of stone or wood, it resembles quite a lot with the bugger piece. The color, smell and pattern of the chipped piece would match with the large block. This idiom was later used to represent the similarity between a child and a parent. Child is the ‘chip’ and father is the ‘block’.
