Etymology:

  • This expression became popular after the television sets were present in every household of America in late 80s. This is an American phrase, which was used by elders to advise their children to get up and go play outside. After 20th century, this expression became more popular with the advent of latest gadgets. People spend their leisure time in front of screen watching different things. Potato is a fat vegetable that appears dull. A person spending, too much, time in front of television will certainly become fat and appear dull within a few weeks. This idiom is one of the best for lazy people, who do not like to socialize or exercise.
