Anyone ordinary; every possible person
Etymology:
- In 17th century, William Shakespeare used this phrase in his plays, but he used Francis as a last name instead of Harry. In the early 18th century, the name ‘Harry’ got famous and hence it replaced the ‘Francis’ to stand for anybody such as ordinary people of low financial and social status. So now, "Tom, Dick, and Harry" is a critical remark given by a person who thinks himself better and superior to others.
