Etymology:
- It is a 19th century American expression which was thought, to have originated from the observation of a writer. The writer noticed that his horse acted or responded more vigorously and fast when he well-nourished his horse or well-fed him with oats. Later on, the same idea was applied by the writer for people, as men sometimes get energetic and feel lively.
