Etymology:

  • In 1868, in horse and buggy days, first traffic lights of the world were introduced in London. A rotating gas lantern which used red and green panels as an indicator for the drivers when they will stop (red) and move( green). A year later in 19th century, it was replaced with traffic signals when motorcars came in America to ensure safety of cars and pedestrians. The first electric traffic light was introduced in 1920 in Detroit. Movers on the road could go on seeing the green light. Today to “get the green light” means to get permission to do something.
