Hold the Fort

To guard and look after something with care, be watchful of something

Etymology:

  • This expression originated from the military. In many books and movies, the phrase is used about the historic West. During the civil war, when the fort was attached by enemy on the frontier, the soldiers who were appointed to guard it were told to “Hold the fort” and don’t give up, help is on its way”. Today you can “Hold the fort” by taking care and be watchful of something until the owner of the thing returns, or you can look after children if their parents are away for a while.
