Etymology:

  • The expression is thought to have originated from the famous play “Twelfth Night” by William Shakespeare in 1601. People also think the phrase might have come when you bet on a horse of a particular color but the horse of another color won to surprise you. Not sure about the origin but we know that “horse” refers to an idea and “different color which means a new idea or thought. “The Wizard of Oz” the character Dorothy roamed around the Emerald City in a carriage or buggy which was pulled by a horse which kept changing its colors. Dorothy was told that she was riding a “horse of different color.
