In One Ear and Out the Other

Etymology:

• This ancient phrase came from ancient Roman orator Quintilian, in first century A.D, who phrased it in Latin “The things he says flow right through the ears”. In 14th Century, famous English poet Geoffrey Chaucer and many other great writers grasped this phrase and used it in different versions. Later in 16th century, in old English, people used “Went in tone ear and out at the other’. Off course, in reality nothing happens as such, not even air can pass from one ear to another but today the phrase is used to refer a person who does not pay attention to what he is told, as words entered in one ear and out the other without staying in the brain to consider.
