Facing severe penalty, punishment or retribution for having done something wrong
Etymology:
- The phrase might have come from the old practice of expelling or casting bad dogs out of their dogs’ houses. It is also believed to have originated from the story of “Peter Pan” in which a character Mr Darling badly treats the pet dog which is loved by the children , she threw the dog out of the house, but children were so sad at this that they also ran with the dog. Upon realizing her guilt, Mr Darling began to live in the dog house as a punishment for her.
