To pay attention and listen to someone
Etymology:
- Off course the phrase does not imply what it says as you cannot lend your ear to someone as it is not like a pencil, book etc. In 17th century, in the time of William Shakespeare, the phrase was common which meant to listen to someone speaking. In his famous play Julius Caesar, the expression was used by a character Mark Antony as “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears”. The crowd paid attention and the phrase became popular.
