- This expression originated in the early 20th century which is quite recent. The exact origin of this expression are still unclear. One of the possible explanation given by the expert is during First World War. A common name among the Germans was Friedrich which shortened to “Fritz.” Thus, the expression is used to show if something is ruined or not working properly with the comparison of the Germans which were defeated.
