To do something eagerly or whole heatedly, putting in all to succeed

Etymology:

  • This phrase emerged in the 19th century. It refers to the working or function of big organs. It is noticing that at that time, Church playing organs had several pipes that a musician or an organist played by plucking out knobs that were called stops. If you pulled out the entire stops in the organ, it would produce the fullest or loudest sound possible. Later the phrase refers to other activities of life suggesting doing possibly all to succeed in something.
