Etymology:

• In medieval times in England, it was customary for a hungry singer or entertainer who would often arrive at local English, inns, bars or saloons and offer to sing a song or poetry for which he got a meal in return. Later in 17th century the phrase meant to perform some task or do any service in order get your desire fulfilled or to earn something that you need.
