Soft Soap

To gently or politely urge someone to do something, to persuade someone with sweet-talking or buttering

Etymology:

  • It is a 19th century phrase which originated from the imagination of a writer. He presented this phrase when he imagined a similarity between skidding or slinking soap and buttering someone up or persuading someone. To get people do something what you want, to coax someone to do something is similar to soft soaping.
