Etymology:
- This idiom emerged during the 1925 in America. ‘Take a run-out powder’ and ‘dust out of here’ are some of the idioms that were used for leaving out quickly. Dust is mainly associated with the dust of someone’s shoes when one runs away from a place. This particular expression is considered to be altered with the word powder as it is related to the explosiveness of the powder of the gun. If you’re able to leave quickly and no one is able to catch you then you probably are “taking a powder”.
