Toe the Line

Do what you actually are supposed to do; obeying all the rules and regulations; one shouldn’t be disagreeing

Etymology:

  • This is an English expression from the early 19th. People perceive “toe the line” as “toe the line” just like something that’s required to be pulled. However, this ‘toe’ is the toe of your foot. This saying is related to the line of the runners that’s used before the beginning of the race. If your foot is exceeding the line then you’d be kicked out of the race. Similarly, inspection of the sailors and soldiers is also done by checking the toes that if they’re on the straight line or not. Now, ‘toe the line’ primarily means to follow the rules and regulations in the same way others are following.
