Etymology:

• This expression has its roots in a spatial puzzle where you have nine dots in a square--three rows of three dots each--and are asked to connect all the dots with just four straight lines and without picking up your pencil. It is not possible to figure out the puzzle unless you think outside the nine dots. You must use "out of the box thinking" to solve the puzzle.
