Expresses frustration, exasperation, impatience or annoyance

Etymology:

  • Originated in the United States in the 1920s. The cartoonist Thomas Aloysius Dorian is credited with popularizing the idiom. The phrase "crying out loud" was created as an alternative to saying "Oh for Christ's sake!" for people who didn't want to take the Lord's name in vain and keep the second commandment in The Bible.
