Phrases are a group of words in a sentence that contains a concept but are missing the subject or verb and thus are not complete sentences themselves.
Some examples of phrases include:
To reach the bus station you need to leave at 3:00 p.m.
She is looking forward to going out.
Thomas hates the lights on Christmas Eve.
His favorite hobby is to go fishing.
She left her cellphone in the car.
He lost the battle against all odds.
Their fingers interlocked, the couple was taking a long walk.
The above are complete sentences that contain within themselves short and long phrases. All the words in italics are examples of phrases as they are part of a sentence and are missing either the subject or the verb.
