A phrase is s group of words in a sentence that contains a concept but is missing the subject or the verb and thus is an incomplete sentence.

There are several types of phrases in English language which include:

Noun Phrase:

A phrase that acts as a noun in a sentence is known as noun phrase and it contains modifiers and determiners of noun within it.

Example:

They rented a long flashy car.

She bought a sleek shimmery dress.

In the above examples long flashy car and sleek shimmery dress are both noun phrases as they are acting as the noun of the sentence.

Verb Phrase:

A phrase that contains verb and other helping verbs in it is called a verb phrase.

Example:

She is bathing in the shower.

He has eaten his dinner.

The above phrases contain verb in them thus they are verb phrases.

Prepositional Phrase:

When a phrase consists of preposition and object of preposition, it is known as a prepositional phrase.

Example:

They are playing in the ground.

The girl is sleeping on the sofa.

The above phrases contain a preposition and also the object of the preposition thus they are prepositional phrases.

Adjective Phrase:

A phrase that acts as an adjective of the sentence is known as adjective phrase.

Example:

The girl with short hair is not well.

The cup full of coffee fell from her hands.

The above examples of phrases are acting as adjectives of the sentences and are describing the quality of the noun.

Adverb Phrase:

A phrase acting as an adverb of the sentence is called an adverb phrase.

Example:

He was eating soup very fast.

She always speaks in a harsh tone.

In the above examples the phrases are acting as adverb and are describing the quality of the verb.
