A phrase is a group of words in a sentence that is missing the subject and verb and does not convey a complete thought.

There are many types of phrases and one such type is gerund phrase.

Gerund:

A gerund is a noun that originates from a  root verb and have an –ing at the end.

Gerund phrase:

A gerund phrase is a phrase that is made up of a gerund and its modifiers. A gerund phrase acts as a noun (subject or object) in a sentence.

Example:

Swimming is my favorite hobby.

In the above example, swimming is a gerund as it originates from root verb swim plus an –ing. In this phrase a gerund is present, thus it is known as a gerund phrase.
