Out like a Light

Quickly asleep, unconscious, sleeping soundly

Etymology:

  • The wonders of electricity has great part in the generation of this idiom. In the 20th century, people of America were able to turn on and turn off the lights just through the switch. By the middle of the 20th century, the term “out like a light” was used to refer to a person who has fallen sleep immediately. The reason of sleep is basically that the person quickly was unconscious like the case when a person is knocked out in the boxing ring or drugged.
