Better Half

Etymology:

• English Protestants followed strict religious rules in the 15th and 16th century. According to them there were two parts of every person. Body and soul are the two different parts and soul is described to be a better part due to its spiritual side. In the same manner a famous English writer, Sir Philip Sidney described marriage as a union of two halves and the better half would be eventually the better spouse. In modern context better half is used as a compliment and used to relate to ones wife. But it is not a strict practice to call ones wife a better half only, as men could be called better half too.
