Crocodile Tears

False grief or fake tears to gain attention

Etymology:

  • It is a very old expression that was used by Romans initially. Crocodiles make wailing sounds to attract the attention of any prey. They make loud noise to attract the nearby prey, which came really close to investigate the cause of sounds. It was also supposed that crocodiles shed fake tears after or while consuming their prey. Shakespeare has used this term in his writings to reveal insincere sympathy by certain people.
