Etymology:
- In 1542, a Dutch scholar and theologian Erasmus used this expression in his writings. Nowadays, dogs are treated humanely and lead good lives. However, dogs normally don't live as well as human. In some regions of the world, dogs are not considered as pets. Consequently, this idiom means to lead an unfortunate or miserable life.
