Feet of Clay

A hidden flaw in one’s character

Etymology:

  • This expression takes its reference from Bible Daniel ( 2:31-32) a king who saw a dream of a statue whose head was made of gold, its body was made of silver and brass, its legs were of iron and its feet were made of iron and clay. Then he visualizes that the statue broke into pieces which eventually flew way in the air. The kings for teller interpreted his dream saying that his empire will come to an end finally. It simply suggests that any highly regarded thing or person has some “feet of clay” which can spoil one’s reputation.
