Fill the Bill

Something or someone having the required qualities or experiences

Etymology:

  • To describe in the terms of theatre, bill refers to a list of performances or acts to be performed in front of the audience in a theatre. In the 19th century, audience liked to have all forms of entertainment from performers such as dancers, comedians, singer and jugglers. To make sure that the audience is contented with the lined up evening events, manager of the theater used to add some acts in the list to “fill the bill. The meaning has been broadened to anything or anyone who rightly serves the purpose.
