Etymology:
- This phrase has been used by British writers and speakers in the early 17th and 18th century. It has some theories regarding its origin. From 12th to 15thcentury, in Dutch language, gabbelen was the word used for silly talkative person. In Gaelic language, gob is the word for mouth which later changed to gab, a today it is used an English word that means to talk a lot on small things. Hence today the words gabble and gob, gave rise to “gift of gab”.
