Give Someone the Third Degree

Etymology:

• In any crime show on TV, you see a criminal “getting a third degree”. In a small room, he is kept, where he is surrounded by police men asking him questions in loud voice about what happened. Freemasons is an international organization which has three degrees. Third degree means highest in which a person gets serious questioning. In 19th century it meant strong investigation and later in 20th century it refer to police “grilling” who treat prisoners as a piece of barbecue meat.
