Hear a Pin Drop

Etymology:

• It is quite observing a lamp smashing to the ground produces a lot of noise which could be even heard from another room. But if a pin drops, on the ground, you do not hear it even if you just stand right there. In 19th century, the expression was used in the days when women used to sew their own clothes using pins and needles, if a pin dropped on flour of a room that was silent enough to allow you to hear the pin hitting the floor. Today you can use this phrase to suggest any muted and hushed place with no silence at all.
