Etymology:

  • The expression suggests that when you really work hard in studies, it is considered as you “hit the books”. But why hit? Actually the word “Hit” has many meanings. Hit mostly means to strike something with great force. “The bomb hits its target” and it is also used to describe ones desire to get something saying “He hit upon the right formula”.
