- From Middle English hole, hol, from Old English hol, from Proto-Germanic *hulą noun derivative of Proto-Germanic *hulaz. Cognate with Dutch hol, Walloon hol, Swedish hål, Norwegian Bokmål hull,Norwegian Nynorsk and Faroese hol. Compare also German Höhle.
