Etymology:
- In 19th century, the expression came from Southern part of America. A catbird produces sound like a cat usually sits on the top of trees, looks for its prey from its sharp eyes. In 1940, a popular sports caster Red Barber used this expression on radio to explain a strong batter who confronts a weak pitcher and vice versa. It was also used as a title of short story by James Thurber. Today we can use this expression for anyone who is “in the catbird seat” means at higher position than other people.
