Etymology:
- This is an American expression of the 19th century. At different situations, when a person is afraid, angry and about to weep, his lips often begin to shake. But if to hide such emotions of fear, anger and pain you are told to “keep a stiff upper lip”. Many think why the expression deals with upper lip and not to both lips? It might have something to do with the styles of mustaches many men have in 19th century, when their trembling upper lip was more observable and noticeable.
