To startle, shock, thrill, astonish, or amaze someone

Etymology:

  • The expression originates with the idea of being hit so hard by someone that you were knocked out of your socks, but even before shoes, your socks have to be knocked off. Hence anything that makes you bare footed has to be extraordinary, exciting, mesmerizing and too great. It has to be powerful and electrifying enough to have knocked you socks off.
