To look down upon people, to treat people inferior or low

Etymology:

  • In 18th century, the phrase “to look down” at others meant that you are superior, in rank, status or something to others. It was after two centuries that “nose” was added in the expression. The phrase rightly explains those who think they are superior and consider others low, poor, menial and inferior to them, they actually “look down their nose at them”, because they are arrogant and their vanity has made them so.
