Etymology:
- This is a 20th century phrase. It referred to great financial loss, or property due to money lost in bet or probably because of poor or ineffective management of money. To understand it this way, if someone loses something important and precious, although it is a great loss but not big as losing one’s shirt from the body, which means to lose everything one have in possession practically. Nowadays, the idiom also refers to get ready for fight as one loses his shirt when he wanted to fight.
