off the schneid

Finally achieving something after a lengthy streak of bad luck or futility

Etymology:

  • From the German “schneiden” meaning “to cut.” Originally referring to a gin rummy player who has failed to tally any points in a game (becoming the “schneid”) and is ‘cut off’ from winning, and therefore being “off the schneid” is making the cut and climbing out of last place.
