Etymology:

  • A false superstition about the woods being dark and mysterious and dangerous place existed for centuries. The superstitions date back to the ancient Roman times. It was thought that if you are stuck in the middle of woods, you are in deep trouble. But if you got “out of the woods” then you were considered to be safe. The phrase is often used to express the situation when you have solved any problem or got out of a dangerous position.
