To take all your chances on one plan or idea, to use all your options at one time

Etymology:

  • This idiom originated in 17th century with an idea and thought that if you have eggs and you put all of them in one basket and if the basket is dropped, then you will have all your eggs smashed or cracked at once, with nothing left in your basket. Similarly, the same idea can be carried over to life, if you risk all your chances or place all you expectations on just one thing, then you might have nothing left at all.
