Etymology:
- It is a 19th century phrase which originated from a mischievous kind of act which people performed to tease other by faltering them. They used to catch their legs with cane or by moving a string across the sidewalk. The trick was played either for the sake of fun or it was sometimes performed by the robbers to steal things off from people they made their victims when they had fallen to ground. Today this expression is used to tease someone or making one fool.
