  • The smell of rose is liked by everyone. It is even used in fragrances and perfumes. In 20th century when this phrase originated, the writer of the phrase might have thought about someone who if falls into something filthy and foul like marsh or slough and surprisingly comes out smelling sweet like a rose. Thus the phrase caught on to describe someone who manages to come out successful from any trouble.
