Etymology:

  • This well-known phrase comes from boxing. The fighter in the boxing knows that any punch coming straight from the shoulder is indeed very powerful and effective, which could knock anybody down. Later in the 19th century, the phrase put on a wider meaning which referred to anybody who is sincere and frankly speaks to you and does not lie is called as speaking straight from the shoulder. He is honest person.
