To say something that someone else was about to say or even thinking about it

Etymology:

  • In reality, no one can reach the mouth of someone and take the words out. However, imagine that if you were just going to say “it’d be raining sooner” and your friend said that sentence just a few seconds before. Thus, your friend just took the words right out of your mouth. You’d agree to the words your friend said to you. This idiom is considered to be 500 years old. People used to say something similar to the thoughts of someone else even at that time as well.
