Under the Weather

Slightly ill, not feeling well, low in spirits, not healthy, ill

Etymology:

  • The idiom could possibly has originated from the middle of the 18th century in United States. People back then traveled by boat. In cases when the weather was rough or stormy, a large proportion of people got sick as a result of bad weather. The phrase was soon used at got the shortened form to “under the weather.” This expression was first used in the novel in the year 1850.
