To proceed very cautiously, to be in precarious position, to be diplomatic for fear of upsetting someone
Etymology:
- This idiom originated in Italy in the 16th century. The writer who first used this idiom is supposed to have imagined a person stepping very cautiously on the floor in which eggs are placed. The person is trying his best not to break any eggshell. Although this is almost impossible, but the idiom was used to refer to something done with great care. The idiom is sometimes referred to as “walk on eggshells.”
