Stop being involved in something, to end involvement with someone or something, stop being responsible for something, disown
Etymology:
- This expression originated from the Bible. A Roman official in Judea, Pontius Pilate announced that he was unable to stop execution of Jesus. Later he washed his hands from the execution in front of the crowd by saying that he was not responsible for the death of Jesus. The position when you are not at a sink with soap and water refers to the idiom “wash your hands of something.” Using the idiom depicts that you are no longer responsible for something in present or in the future.
